“Industrial Technologies 2014 - Smart Growth through Research and Innovation” Congress, 9-11 April 2014, Megaron Athens

11 November 2013

“Industrial Technologies 2014 - Smart Growth through Research and Innovation” conference is organised within the Greek Presidency of the European Council, in Athens on April 9-11th 2014, at Athens Megaron Conference Hall. The event is under the auspices of the General Secretariat of Research & Technology (GSRT) and is supported by The European Commission Directorate for Research and Innovation.

The Industrial Technologies 2014 event is coordinated by the Foundation for Research & Technology (FORTH / ICE-HT) having as partners SEV Hellenic Federation of Enterprises, the Finish company Spinverse and the Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems & Automation of University of Patras.

The event will deal with the European innovative industrial production and shall investigate the role that Nanotechnology, New Materials and Industrial Processes (NMP) may have for the industrial growth in Europe as they move forward to the future. The conference aims to present the multidimensional perspectives for the development οf Nano, Materials and Production technologies.

The Conference is planned to be an open forum aiming to foster interactions between Greek Industry and European research, academic and industrial communities, as well as with Policy Makers.. It will be an occasion to highlight the capabilities of Greek industry and its potential to innovate, to grow, to excel.

Industrial Technologies 2014 should ultimately provide answers to three questions:

  • Which industrial technologies are likely to have the greatest impact on European competitiveness and growth by 2020, and what is needed to ensure that this impact is achieved?
  • What are the most significant barriers to innovation, and how can these be overcome?
  • How can research and innovation become the vehicles for growth in economies under recession?

The major topics of the conference will be:
  • Innovation in SMEs: analysis of enablers & barriers, deployment / commercialization of NMP research results, the role of NMP skills for innovation, innovation through international & regional collaboration.
  • The “Factories of the Future” research & innovation initiative for European manufacturing: a regional perspective, experiences from national/regional initiatives, relevance for Greek economy – challenges & priorities for Greek industry and SMEs.
  • The interaction between the industry and the academia, with new ideas and new research for innovative products.
  • Smart specialization for research & innovation: examples of synergies (FP7 and structural funds) & best practices. Planned synergies between cohesion policy and the NMP Horizon 2020 programme, regional policies in Greece, strengths and assets of Greece.
  • Key Enabling Technologies: Vehicles for Growth including risk minimization while developing demo and pilot lines through clustering activities within KETs.
  • The Launch of Horizon2020 for Industrial Technologies. Since the new work programme will have just been announced, the possible interactions and synergies between Smart Specialization and research actions of Horizon 2020 may be deployed

The event is addressed to all stakeholders involved in NMP including representatives of established industry and SMEs, research Centres and Universities, representatives of the financial sector and investors, as well as policymakers at regional, member state and international level who eventually participate  in one of the over 500 EU funded research projects, Public Private Partnerships (Factories of the Future, Green Cars, and Energy Efficient Buildings), and other initiatives.

The congress is structured in a way that includes three plenaries and four parallel streams of up to 15 core sessions, workshops on cutting-edge issues of nanotechnology, advanced materials and manufacturing processes, side events such as a matchmaking session, and two exhibitions; the first one presenting industrial excellence and innovation of Greek companies (Greek Showcase), to be organized by SEV, and the second one presenting innovative products from international companies operating in Europe.
