Address of the Vice-Chairman of SEV- Federation of Greek Industries Dr. Athanase Lavidas in the Business Forum «Development of Trade and Investment between Greece and Israel» during the visit of Greek Business Delegation to Israel, Tel Aviv, January 23rd, 2006

24 January 2006

Distinguished guests,

Ladies & Gentlemen,

Shalom !

It is an honor for all of us, the delegation of the Federation of Greek Industries (SEV) and the Exports Association of Northern Greece (SEVE) to be here with you today. Before introducing our Federation to you, I would like to thank the Manufacturers’ Association of Israel and the Israel Export & International Cooperation Institute for their efforts to organize this business forum, which I believe will mark a new era to the relationships between Israeli and Greek companies.

SEV is the leading Employers Organization in Greece, representing the collective vision and interests of our country’s business community. The Federation contributes to sound economic development by participating in the social dialogue, representing employer’s interests on various policy issues and by submitting policy papers to the Government, to the Opposition Party and to Trade Unions. We cooperate with the Government to enhance the international competitiveness of our country, by eliminating restrictive regulations and bureaucracy, while creating the necessary framework that will further facilitate growth of business.

This is not my first visit to your country. Under the persistent efforts of the Israeli Ambassador in Athens, I visited Israel last September for the second time. My impressions from that trip were so positive, that it was my wish to come back again, with a delegation. And here we are today! Together with our colleagues from Thessaloniki, the Exporters’ Association of Northern Greece, we are eager to exchange ideas and proposals on a concrete framework, aiming to identify areas of common interest and to achieve mutual benefits.

Israeli and Greeks have a lot in common. We share the same characteristics; both nations enjoy the Mediterranean temperament, we are both creative, visionaries, with many achievements in commerce and in science, we are internationally oriented and… we are all over the world! This aptitude for entrepreneurship, for progress and discovery can bring Israeli and Greek people even closer and take advantage of the similarities we share, aiming at the economic growth and prosperity.
