On 20 October 2005 the UNICE Competitiveness Day will bring together for the third time hundreds of business people from all over Europe in the European Parliament Hemicyle to demonstrate for a Competitive Europe!
The theme of this year is “Crossing Frontiers” and addresses the reality that businesses increasingly have to operate against a global backdrop. Among other aspects, modern communication technologies mean that a whole range of activities can be conducted almost anywhere in the world.
The opportunities are obvious, but crossing frontiers is challenging as well as exciting. A range of cultures have to be assimilated. The scale on which a business thinks has to be adjusted. Physical frontiers must not be barriers to synergy between complementary talents.
Crossing frontiers covers more than just companies investing abroad.
Crossing frontiers is also a personal challenge to be innovative and the personal challenge for everybody in the company. Furthermore, for the EU, crossing frontiers means a positive attitude to change. Also, effective reforms will create a climate conductive to growth and jobs.
Success will ultimately be dependent on performance: delivering what the customer wants, when he wants it, at the required level of quality and at the right price. Competitiveness is an issue for individual companies, but it is also an area where public authorities at all levels can make the difference.
